Taekwondo is a Korean martial art that utilizes the hands and feet for striking and blocking. It is also known for using an array of jumps and kicks more than other martial arts. Unlike wrestling styles, the methods for offensive and defensive techniques are strikes and blocks.
Korea is located between China and Japan. China is known for ‘soft style’ martial arts like Kung-Fu and Tai Chi which utilizes smooth, flowing moves. Japan is known for ‘hard style’ martial arts like Karate which utilizes direct strikes with the hands and feet. Taekwondo is a mixture of both countries and is a combination of both soft and hard style.
Students practice choreographed patterns of form which utilizes stance, blocks, hand strikes, and kicks. This requires focus, memorization, breathing technique, and balance. it is ideal for improving balance, flexibility, coordination and endurance. Besides the physical benefits many people practice Taekwondo to improve self-confidence and to gain valuable discipline.
Taekwondo is one of the fastest growing sports in the world and is the only of these martial arts that is a sport in the Olympic Games. Currently more people study the art of Taekwondo than all other forms of martial arts combined.
