If your child has been interested in martial arts in Santa Clarita, or if you’re looking for a great outlet for your child to learn a new skill, you may be hesitant due to some taekwondo myths. We’d like to set the record straight here and offer you the truth.

1. Taekwondo will turn your kids into bullies

Sadly, this is one of the most common myths we hear. When it comes to parents, they may see martial arts training such as taekwondo as a reason to teach your children that fighting is a solution. This is especially true for parents of special needs children who may already have a history of aggressiveness and may worry that taekwondo training will only worsen the situation.  The truth is that martial arts actually teaches non-violent problem solving techniques and instills values that are contradictory to bullying. Physical activity is actually a great way to give rowdy children an outlet in a safe environment, making it less likely that they will act up elsewhere.

2. Your kids will get hurt or suffer injuries

This one can be concerning to parents. You may imagine your child suffering from head injuries, black eyes, or bruises because of their martial arts training. Yes, it’s a physical sport, but no more physical than say football or ice skating or even jumping on a trampoline. Bumps and bruises may happen frequently, but the truth is that if you’re going to let that deter you from letting your child do taekwondo, then you might as well keep them home wrapped in a bubble. What the children are doing at our studio isn’t at the same level as the pros and the risk involved is quite minimal.

3. There’s no point in learning if they’re not going to compete

Competitions are actually the least common reason why special needs children do taekwondo training. The truth is that our training is more about learning valuable life skills and control. It’s also a great way to incorporate physical activity while also having fun. If you and your child want to train to one day get into competitions, great! And if they just want to train to have a good time and learn a few skills, that’s great too!

Parents of children with special needs may have trouble exploring the different ways they can help. You may not think that taekwondo is a good option, but with some open mindedness, you’ll find that the most unique activities can often be the most helpful.
